Meet Meesh Daranyi

Meet Meesh Daranyi

Most people’s first tour isn’t a stadium run with Linkin Park. Meesh Daranyi’s was.

She’s been a jewellery maker, painter, photographer, yoga teacher and massage therapist, and these days she’s a potter too, but her day job for the last 15 years has been styling film and TV. On the From Zero tour she dressed six band members in six distinct styles, with a decent stack of Deus in the mix. Back on solid ground, our good friend and stylistic muse joined us in Camperdown to check out the new collection over a coffee, and chat about personal style, creative side quests and why comfort always wins.

What draws you to Deus, and how do you think the band represents this on stage?

What I love the most about Deus is that it’s casual but still feels classy. There’s a streetwear aesthetic while also feeling slightly elevated in a fashion sense. You can be relaxed while feeling put together. That’s what made it so great on stage. It stood out while being both comfortable + stylized. It feels versatile, it works across the board for all 6 band members, each with a unique and specific style.

How do you approach styling and what do you think makes a piece unique to the person wearing it?

I like to approach styling as a collaborative effort. I believe that people should feel comfortable as themselves while pushing the limits slightly to try something that they may not typically lean towards. I believe that when we allow ourselves to try something new, that leads to a whole new path of exploration and inspiration. Also, I am a sucker for layering. Add more to create unique lines + pieces to take off that feel like a new outfit with each layer.

What is your starting point when styling members of the band? The person, the setting or the clothes themselves?

When styling the band for their on stage looks, I approach it as a whole piece. What one band member wears is contingent on the others. I like to coordinate slightly, so there’s a cohesiveness to what they are all wearing. Whether that is sticking to a colour or two, pattern as a theme or specific silhouette, there’s a story to be told and it all links together in some way. I take into account location as well. I think about incorporating local designers or sports teams. When we were in Australia and Sweden I focused on showcasing the known designers from those places such as Acne and Song For The Mute.

What was your favourite Deus piece you styled during the From Zero World Tour?

It starts with one… Jersey. This was probably the piece that I utilized the most- The simple yet decorative style jerseys that Deus makes.

I also really loved Emily in the mechanical jumpsuit as well as the Japanese souvenir inspired jacket for Joe + Mike + the subtle navy camo.

How has your personal style changed over the years, and what has stayed the same?

I’m such a creature of comfort. I like to feel like I can do a myriad of things throughout the day that my outfit won’t stop me from doing. But I also want to feel chic while doing it all. Bottom line though, if it isn’t comfortable, I won’t wear it. This has always been the case for me, however the items I lean towards change. I oscillate between what can feel feminine vs masculine. I love a great slip dress with a sweater or a high waisted trouser with a silk blouse or a well worn in pair of old Levi’s and a tee. I don’t have a set look and I enjoy playing with many varying styles. I also find myself in phases where I want pops of color or patterns that are wacky and then quickly shift to only being drawn to solids or monochromatic. I sometimes feel like a shape shifter and my mood, can more often than not, be the deciding factor in what I wear.

From where do you draw inspiration?

I am very visual. I love to people watch. I truly enjoy seeing what other people wear and how they piece items together. It always feels like a building block for me that then gets me to what I like. I know what I like just as well as what I don’t like. I then create a look or play around with ideas from that place. I love vintage. True vintage. I always wonder what it would have been like to live during the 30’s with the draping and exposed backs while in a full silk gown. That era has a stronghold on my heart. It was a time of immense change met with innovation + design revolution.

Where do you feel the most free and yourself?

In general, I feel the most grounded when I’m in nature and near a body of water. That is what makes me feel the most free and tuned into myself.

What are your other creative outlets?

I’ve always loved making things with my hands. I designed jewelery at one point in my life using the lost wax method + painted throughout college. I studied photography in school after changing my major from fashion design. Many moons ago, in my late 20’s, I was a certified massage therapist + yoga teacher. I currently love making ceramics! I truly enjoy creative projects + using new mediums.

Quick fire:

First gig?

I have been styling + doing costumes for film, tv + commercials for 15 years. Though I’ve previously styled bands such as Grouplove, this was my first time touring with a band!

Best live show?

Khruangbin. Endless jam.

Records currently on repeat?

I really want to get a record player but the artists I can’t seem to get enough of right now are Arlo Parks + Son Little. Also, proper throwback shout out to Robyn - she is genius.

Recent reads?

I miss reading. I’ve been doing audio books. I’m such a deep (sometimes over) thinker and a dreamer. I have a rather vivid imagination so sometimes reading is my escape. I need something light and carefree since my brain can often feel intense. I enjoy the ease of author Emily Henry. With that said, I’ve also read 5 of Brene Brown’s books and am fascinated with human development. Honest admission- I’m a sucker for a tv binge. I love a good romcom though my current obsession is The Silo.
