The history of American flat track racing is filled with legendary Wrecking Crews, eras of dominance by a particular make of motorcycle by a collective group of privateers or factory teams on a winning streak. Harley Davidson's Wrecking Crew was led by Joe Petrali in the '30s. Indian's Wrecking Crew of Bob, Bill, and Earnie dominated in the '50s. The BSA Wrecking Crew of Stu Morley, Al Gunter, Jack O'Brien, and Neil Keen brought down Ascot every Friday night in the '60s. The list goes on, all true American Heroes with big balls.
The Deus Wrecking Crew is not like them.
Not even close.
But they are wrecking a lot less than they used to and even squeezing in a win here and there, but ultimately just out to have a good time whilst trying to go as fast as possible until talent runs out. Races put on by IV League Flattrack were held at Del Mar Arena on the weekend and the lads had a real good time in the pits and on the track. Josh Mills (88) put his TT500 to good work in the stacked vintage singles class while Julian (517) and Forrest (506) ran their vintage twins. Nevin (11s) opted for brakeless on his 2-stroke, utilizing the compression release via vice-grip lever thing-a-mibob, real Factory Team race technology. [Yeah, a Hot Dog factory maybe! -ed]
We sorely missed our European counterparts of the Deus Wrecking Crew, Dimitri Coste (67/87) and Geoff Cain (45). And there are probably a handful of others that we'd have on the team, or at least over for dinner.
On the pro level, Sunday's 50-lap main event was won with authority by Jeffery Carver (23) who had some great battles with Kale Kolkman (98) who ended up winning the 8-lap Open Pro class earlier in the program.
The Deus Wrecking Crew is looking forward to the next race up in Salem, Oregon with See See Motorcycles during the1moto show, happening Feb 10,11, and 12. See you there!
