Specter Design x Deus Customs

Specter Design - created by Tanner Boyes, artist, designer and craftsman hailing from San Clemente California - finds its focus in metal-craft, body work, car design, and customisation. Before his work led him into the automotive industry, Boyes had watched creativity come to life through apparel - an industry his father was closely connected to.

“In my creative sphere, the work is evolving in parallel with my own taste and capabilities. At some point, if it becomes clear that developing an idea further is no longer improving it. I typically leave it alone at that moment.”

With this, a capsule range that considers detail, type and discerning material selection that seamlessly captures the design sensibilities of both Specter and Deus was a natural next step. Imbued with a vintage, dead stock sensibility across styling, fabrication and manufacturing methods, the fifteen piece range - tees, outerwear, pants, accessories - is heavily influenced by car design, as well as apparel and art of the 1960s.

“I first became an admirer of Deus around 2008, I knew for a long time that I wanted to be involved with the brand in some way, and when the surprising opportunity arose to design a collection together in 2022 it was a no-brainer.”

- Tanner Boyes

A rich selection of fabrications across the collection - wool and polyester blends to cotton corduroy, denim, and organic cotton fleece - all are treated with heavy enzyme and garment washes to achieve a soft, lived-in feel. The use of yarn-dyed check fabrics and all-over printed yardage art highlights the dedication to visual and artistic inclinations of both partners.

Thoughtful design inclusions - bold embroidery and printed artwork, corozo nut button cuff adjusters and mother-of-pearl buttons - offer tactile considerations that elevate pieces throughout the collection. The relaxed-fit of styles such as the Specter Work Pant and Specter Stamp Jacket offer a utilitarian function, while the tees and fleece utilise traditional circular knitting machines to produce styles that have a tubular construction with no side seams. Despite being a method far less popular in apparel production today - a process slower compared with high output flatbed knitting - the absence of side seams achieved with tubular construction ensures the finished garment retains shape and offers elevated comfort for the wearer.

Rounding out the limited edition range, is the vintage-inspired Specter Cap - a play on the shallow fit pillbox cap - and the Specter Tools Bucket hat, crafted in satin and cotton respectively - each offering functional, style-led design.
